Sedation

Sedation Dentistry

We understand that going to the dentist can be scary – but it doesn’t have to be! So much has changed in dentistry over the years, and we are always updating our offerings to include the latest technologies and ways to reduce discomfort and anxiety.

For people who avoid dentists like the plague, sedation dentistry may take away some of their anxiety. Sedation can be used for everything from invasive procedures to a simple tooth cleaning. How it’s used depends on the severity of the fear.

At Vic West Dentistry we offer three types of sedation:

Don’t worry if you don’t have an escort – we have nitrous oxide so that you can be sedated and be safe to drive home by the time you’re done. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is easily administered by inhalation and offers minimal sedation. All you have to do is breathe and the gas will help you relax. Your dentist can control the amount of sedation you receive, and the gas tends to wear off quickly so no escort is needed! We suggest you avoid drinking coffee on the day, but if you’re a java nut it’s not required.

Ativan is a form of oral sedation. Typically you will take the pill 1-2 hours before your appointment. Depending on the total dose given, oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate.  The pill will make you drowsy, some people become groggy enough to actually fall asleep during the procedure! As this form of sedation causes drowsiness it requires you have an escort.

Triazalam is a form of oral sedation. Typically you will take the shortly before your appointment. Depending on the total dose given, oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate.  The pill will make you drowsy, some people become groggy enough to actually fall asleep during the procedure! As this form of sedation causes drowsiness it requires you have an escort.

Is sedation dentistry covered by my insurance?
